FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: What is Riley Hospital for Children?
Riley Hospital for Children is one of the nation’s leading pediatric hospitals and Indiana’s first and only comprehensive hospital dedicated exclusively to the care of children. As a part of Clarian Health, Riley Hospital has provided compassionate care, support and comfort to children and their families for over 85 years. Each year, Riley serves over 230,000 inpatients and outpatients from across Indiana, the nation and the world. Riley Hospital’s partnership with Clarian Health, and its strong affiliation with the Indiana University School of Medicine, makes it the only comprehensive clinical resource for Indiana’s children and the premiere source for health-related information for their parents. From simple care associated with the health and wellness of children and less complex specialty care to the most critically-ill and medically complex cases, Riley Hospital for Children is a national leader. Clarian Health operates the Methodist Hospital, Indiana University Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children campuses as a single hospital under Indiana law. When did this medical mission trip begin? When will it end?
The mission trip began on Wednesday, Feb. 18, as the Riley Heart Team embarked on their fourth medical mission trip to the Middle Eastern country of Jordan. The team is scheduled to return to Indianapolis on Monday, March 2.

What does Riley hope to accomplish through their medical mission trips to the Middle East?
The goal of each of the Riley Heart Team’s medical mission trips is to provide life sustaining heart surgeries and clinical services to children with congenital heart defects from various regions of the Middle East who would not otherwise receive medical care. The team will also provide mentoring, education and the exchange of professional best practices, ideas and methodologies with health care professional peers in the Middle East.

In addition to providing care, the Riley Heart Team will work to strengthen relationships and with physicians, medical support personnel, local medical facilities and philanthropic support organizations in Middle East regions such as Jordan, Iraq, Syria and Egypt- all in the ultimate hope of building a coalition of allied hospitals and establishing telemedicine sites for future collaboration between Middle Eastern health care providers and Riley physicians back in the U.S.

Where did the idea for Riley’s Middle East medical mission trips come from?
This is an important mission that was born from the Riley Hospital for Children and Rotary International’s Gift of Life program, which began in 1998 as an initiative to bring children from other nations who were in need of heart surgery but did not have access to life-saving care to Riley Hospital for Children. Since that time, Riley, in conjunction with Rotary, has performed surgeries on 44 children spanning the globe including China, Pakistan, Jamaica, Ecuador, Africa, Honduras, Haiti, the Philippines, Afghanistan and Iraq.

From of the success of this program, the idea to provide mission trips was born and Riley and the Rotary came together to establish medical missions to the Middle East. Since that time, the Riley Heart Center staff has been able to perform surgeries on 33 children (from Jordan, Syria and Iraq) in Amman, Jordan over the course of these mission trips.

How are these medical mission trips being funded?
Both the Gift of Life program and the subsequent medical missions have been funded through the Rotary Club, the pro bono work of Riley staff, the Riley Administration and other private funding sources.

  3. After just 3 days it is obvious that the Riley surgical team is again making a huge difference in many of the lives of numerous children and their parents internationally. It is always amazing to see how these children look “so good” — so quickly after the trama of major surgery. The pictures clearly reflect that the kid’s parents are greatly relieved and that they are so appreciative of the help they have been able to get for their children. It’s fun to see the success you have had with previous patients like Farah and Aboudi (Aboudi was possibly my favorite from your previous trip). What a difference the Indy Riley team and Dr’s. Fadi and Kal have made in so many lives. I look forward to reading about more of the children and their families as you continue your mission trip. Best wishes for additional great successes while you are in Jordan. We look forward to seeing and hearing more when you return to Indy (especially from Nurse Becky). Family life without her is truely not nearly so much fun.
